Nobody does Art Cars quite like BMW. Others try, from time to time, sure. But over the past 40 years, the Bavarian automaker has collaborated with world-renowned artists to create no fewer than 17 unique art cars, each a work of art in its own right.

One of the things we love the most about BMWs art cars is that, as creative as they are, they're not just for show. Many of them have been raced, and raced hard - from the first 3.0 CSL painted by Alexander Calder (pictured above) to the latest M3 GT2 by Jeff Koons.

Unfortunately, while the cars have gone on display in galleries and museums around the world, seeing all 17 in one place is a rarity. So to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the art car program, BMW has put the entire collection online. Each car gets its own exhibit and film highlighting its creation, all laid out in a virtual museum.

There's also a forty-minute video on the history of the program, a short synopsis of which we've got in the clip after the jump along with the full press release, along with a smattering of official images in the first gallery and our own photos in the second gallery from when four of the collection's finest came to LA. Click on to check it out, and follow the link to BMW's online art car exhibition.

2013 Porsche Cayman Spied Up Close

We now have much closer shots of the next Cayman, and they reveal a more 911-like silhouette and front end. The roof appears flatter than the current car?s, and we can see just how much the stretched wheelbase affects things like the size of the rear window. Less exciting: This prototype appears to have some [...]

2010 Fiat Ducato
Fiat Ducato - Click above for high-res image gallery

It's looking like Chrysler may be ready to re-badge a couple more European vans and bring them to our shores. The automaker is reportedly weighing the option of bringing the pint-sized
front-wheel-drive Fiat Doblo, its bigger brother the Ducato and the seriously meaty Iveco Daily to these shores, all vans to be marketed under the recently minted Ram brand.

We figure that Chrysler would aim the Doblo squarely at the Ford Transit Connect, another European hauler repurposed for the U.S., while the Ducato would slot nicely in the hole left by the departed Dodge Sprinter. For bigger jobs, enter the Iveco Daily, which sees use in nearly every other part of the world to haul just about anything.

Buying domestic -- in Japan

Greetings from Japan! I'm rather jet-lagged and very tired, so you'll forgive me if my writing sounds a bit awkward. Anywho, this is my first visit to the Land of the Rising Sun, and one of the things I've noticed is the overwhelming preference for domestic cars. I've seen a handful of German cars -- no American cars so far -- but the overwhelming majority of cars here seem to be Japanese.

Watch Toyota explain hybrids to Germans [Video]

I don't speak a word of German, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate watching Toyota try to explain the Auris hybrid to the people from the land of the Teutonic Knights. Apparently, it involves little people in Toyota's hybrid drive system who hold hands with each other. Because that makes sense. More »
